Albyn Bing

One of the smaller oil shale bings of West Lothian, the Albyn Bing lies in the shadow of the much larger Greendykes Bing, immediately to the north of Broxburn. Abandoned in 1925, this is one of a number of bings which serve as a reminder of an industry which extracted oil from shale. Extending to 6 ha (15 acres), this bing represents the waste from the Albyn Oil Works which opened c. 1863. The Albyn Industrial Estate now occupies the site of the oil works. Although much eroded, the bing still reaches a height of 135m (443 feet) above sea level, or 46m (151 feet) above the surrounding landscape. The slopes of the bing are partially naturalised with grass and birch trees.
