A historic swimming club situated on the north side of Belford Road in the New Town of Edinburgh, Drumsheugh Baths Club lies a half-mile (0.8 km) west northwest of the city centre. A modest single-storey facade with a deeply overhanging canopy, on a steeply sloping site, gives way to a three-storey building behind with a 23.3-m / 70-foot swimming pool on the lowest level. Built 1882-86, this was the work of Sir John James Burnet (1857 - 1938). However, it was destroyed by fire on 6th February 1892 and Burnet returned to rebuild at a cost of £6000. However the work bankrupted the original company and local people clubbed together, acquiring the building from the liquidator for just £4500. The building was B-listed in 1970 and upgraded to an A-listing in 2009.
The interior shows distinctly Moorish influences, including tile-work, horseshoe brick arches, keyhole-shaped windows and fretwork screens. Above the four-lane Victorian swimming pool are original rings and trapeze, which remain in regular use. Other facilities include a sauna, steam room, hot tub and gym, together with a members' lounge.
Drumsheugh Baths Club Limited is a private limited company, but most of its shares are held by subscribing members. The club is run by a Board of Management and a staff of eight.
