The Ardstinchar Bridge and River Stinchar at Ballantrae

An historic bridge which crosses the River Stinchar, the Ardstinchar or Ballantrae Bridge is a masonry structure built in 1770 using stone scavenged from the walls of nearby Ardstinchar Castle. It comprises two principal spans, with segmental arches, a centre pier, buttress, and a small additional arch to the south, with a length approaching 100m (328 feet). Triangular cutwaters extend upwards to form refuges on the roadway and at its northern end is a single-storey cottage that was probably once a tollhouse. The Ardstinchar Bridge was superseded by a new bridge in 1964 and is now only available to pedestrians and cyclists. It has been Category B-listed since 1971.
