Pickan's Dyke

Pickan's Dyke is an earthwork lying to the east of Dalmellington in East Ayrshire. It is best preserved between Dalmellington Cemetery and the summit of Mains Hill, extending to a half-mile (0.8 km) in length and comprising a grassy bank up to 0.7m (2¼ feet) in height and 4.5m (14 feet) in width. It has been interpreted as an old land boundary but it is also suggested that it was part of a much larger feature. Dalmellington was once a defended site, with a motte, separate castle and on a Roman road from Ayr to the Solway Firth.
