A district of Glasgow, situated on the north bank of the River Clyde, 2½ miles (4 km) west northwest of the city centre, Thornwood lies between Broomhill and Partick in the West End, and is often considered a western section of the latter. The area is dominated by four-storey blocks of flats; those in red sandstone built in the 1890s, with beige-harled tenement blocks featuring balconies added in the early 1950s. Also notable is Crathie Court, a large block of flats built by Glasgow Corporation for unmarried women in 1947 and regarded as the first of Glasgow's high-rises. A line of shops and takeaway restaurants lie along Dumbarton Road to the south, and the little Thornwood Park extends to the north. Thornwood Primary School is situated on Thornwood Avenue and was originally Thornwood Public School, dating from 1900. The area is served by Partick Railway Station, located to the southeast.
