Located immediately to the east of the Anderston Interchange, a half-mile (1 km) west of Glasgow city centre, the prominent Anderston Centre was the work of the London-based architect by Richard Seifert (1910 - 2001) and completed in 1972. It was designed as a new centre for the district of Anderston which has undergone a process of urban renewal. The Centre comprised a concrete megastructure containing an integrated complex of offices, housing, leisure facilities and shops, with a bus station on the ground floor. However, the centre was never completed as planned and proved unsuccessful; the community it served had been destroyed by redevelopment and the shops found trading conditions difficult and many closed. Not only was the environment unattractive, but the location was awkward, lying just a little too far from the city centre, it failed to attract shoppers from elsewhere. The desolate centre become a target for vandals. Anderston Bus Station closed in 1993, services having been transferred to Buchanan Street Bus Station.
Subsequent redevelopment saw some of the complex demolished while other sections were refurbished as commercial office space. The residential blocks were renovated and externally clad (2008-11). They are now illuminated in blue at night, ensuring they remain a landmark.
