Beinn Ghlas Wind Farm

Located on the Barguillean Estate 3 miles (5 km) south of Taynuilt (Argyll and Bute) and 6 miles (10 km) east of Oban, the Beinn Ghlas Wind Farm cost £7 million to construct and began generation in 1999. The farm covers an area of 300 ha (741 acres) around Carn Gaibhre, on the eastern slopes of Beinn Ghlas, which at 515m (1690 feet), is the highest hill west of Ben Cruachan. The development comprises fourteen Danish Bonus B600 turbines, each capable of generating 600 kW of power, giving a total generation capacity of 8.4 megawatts (MW). It was opened by a local girl, Jessica Dalgleish, who had written to the developers and described the turbines as 'angels'. The last turbine was named in her honour.

The wind farm was owned and operated by National Wind Power, which was formed in 1991 and became a subsidiary of the German utility and engineering giant RWE AG. Ownership later transferred to Beaufort Wind as part of a re-financing arrangement.
