Rowallan Castle

(Old Rowallan Castle)

Built in the 16th century with later additions, Rowallan Castle is located near Kilmaurs, 3 miles (5 km) north of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire Council Area. Built by the Mures family, it has been owned by the Earls of Glasgow, Earls of Loudoun and the Corbett Lords Rowallan, who placed it in the care of Historic Scotland. Architect Sir Robert Lorimer (1864 - 1929) undertook work on the castle c.1906. The castle is at the centre of a major legal battle between Historic Scotland and a Glasgow-based property developer who has bought the estate and is trying to reclaim the castle to re-unite the two.
