Lochranza Castle

The ruined remains of Lochranza Castle lie on a headland projecting into Loch Ranza on the north coast of the island of Arran, North Ayrshire Council Area. Built by the Montgomerie family in the 16th century, the castle added to an older building, possibly 13th century and built by the Menteith family. Held by the Montgomeries from the 1450s through to 1705 when the Hamiltons gained control. Since 1772 it has lain roofless and in 1897 the northeast corner collapsed.
