Prince Albert Memorial

Lying in the gardens at the centre of Charlotte Square in Edinburgh, is the city's Prince Albert Memorial. Commemorating the death of Albert, at the age of only 42, leaving a grief-stricken Queen Victoria, the memorial was executed by sculptor Sir John Steell (1804-91) after a competition in 1865. The statue depicts Albert mounted on a horse and in the uniform of a Field Marshal. It stands 9.1m (30 feet) high, on a base of Peterhead granite executed by David Bryce (1803-76). Round the base are groups of figures; The Army and Navy by Clark Stanton (1832-94), The Nobility by William Brodie (1815-81), together with Labour and Science and Learning both by D.W. Stevenson (1842 - 1904).

Steele was knighted for his efforts when the monument was unveiled in 1876.
