John Stuart McCaig

1823 - 1902

Oban banker, art critic and philosophical essayist. McCaig was born at Clachan on Lismore (Argyll & Bute). He is remembered through his tower, built on the hillside above Oban, where he died. His death brought an end to the construction of what was to have been an enclosed building and the walls remain as a dramatic folly. It is said his heirs were more enthusiastic for his money than his memorial!
