John Adrian Louis Hope

1912 - 1996

Noble and politician. The second son of Victor Alexander John Hope, the 2nd Marquis of Linlithgow (1887 - 1952), Hope was the younger twin of Charles William Hope (1912 - 1987). Like his brother, he was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, graduating in 1936. He saw active service with the Scots Guards during World War II and was elected as the Conservative Member of Parliament for North Midlothian and Peebles in 1945, moving constituency to Edinburgh Pentlands in 1950. He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1954-56), Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations (1956-57), Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (1957-59) and Minister of Works (1959-62).

In 1948, he married Elizabeth, only daughter of English novelist and playwright W. Somerset Maugham. He was raised to a hereditary peerage as Baron Glendevon of Midhope (Linlithgow) on his retirement from politics in 1964.
