Walter Scott of Harden

(Auld Wat)

? - c.1629

Border reiver. Brought up at Kirkhope Tower, Scott lived at Harden Castle, west of Hawick. He maintained a reputation for looting the surrounding country and when the supplies ran out Scott's wife would serve up his spurs on a platter for dinner, dropping the hint that replenishment was required.

Auld Wat is remembered in many Borders ballads. The noted author Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) is a descendant.
