Journalist and political correspondent. Born in Glasgow, Marr was educated at Dundee High School, Craigflower School (near Dunfermline, Fife) and Loretto School (Musselburgh), before reading English at the University of Cambridge.
Marr joined the Scotsman newspaper in Edinburgh as a trainee in 1981, rising to become a political correspondent within five years. He moved to the Independent for two years, returned to the Scotsman as political editor for a further two years, before joining The Economist in the same role (1988-92). He rejoined the Independent and was appointed its Editor in 1996, although was unsuccessful in this position, soon returning to his favoured role of political pundit. Marr joined the BBC as their political editor in 2000.
Well-respected by colleagues and his public, Marr has won several awards for his work and has published three books; namely The Battle for Scotland (1992), Ruling Britannia (1995) and The Day Britain Died (2000).
Marr suffered a stroke in 2013 but was able to return to his career after a short break.
