Noble. In 1565, Gordon was able to regain the family estates and Earldom of Huntly which had been forfeited after his father, George Gordon, the 4th Earl (1514-62), had led a revolt against Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87). His father and brother had both been killed following this action. He was a close associate for James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell (1536-78) and assisted Bothwell to obtain a divorce from his sister to marry Mary. Gordon remained a supporter of Mary until 1572.
