John Kennedy


1789 - 1833

Minor poet. Born in Kilmarnock, the son of a handloom weaver, Kennedy served in the Royal Regiment of Ayrshire Militia between 1807 and 1815. He returned to Kilmarnock though made himself unpopular as a political radical. He qualified as a teacher and became the school-master at Chapel Green (Queenzieburn) in 1820 with his new wife, dying there 13 years later leaving a young family. He published only one collection 'Fancy's Tour with the Genius of Cruelty, and other Poems' (1826).
