Ebenezer Picken


1769 - 1816

The Poet of Paisley. Born in Paisley, the son of a weaver, Picken was educated at the University of Glasgow. He set out on a career in teaching and founded a school in Falkirk in 1791. He later taught in Edinburgh. Picken is noted for his poems in Scots and for his Pocket Dictionary of the Scottish Dialect.

His daughter, Joanna Belfrage Picken (1798 - 1849) was also a poet and his son Andrew (1802-49) was a poet and artist.
