Sir Hew Dalrymple

(Lord Drummore)

1690 - 1755

Judge. Born into a distinguished East Lothian legal family, Dalrymple was the second son of Sir Hew Dalrymple of North Berwick (1652 - 1737) and grandson of James Dalrymple, Viscount Stair (1619-95). He was appointed a Lord of Session as Lord Drummore in 1726 and a Lord of Justiciary in 1745. Dalrymple fought on the government side in the Battle of Prestonpans in the same year. For a time he occupied Bankton House at Prestonpans, then purchased nearby the Westpans Estate, renaming it Drummore and before building a new house there c.1753.

Dalrymple became a member of the Royal Company of Archers in 1710 and had his portrait painted by Allan Ramsay (1713-84) in 1754.
