Roger Ball

1944 -

Musician. Born in Broughty Ferry (Dundee), Ball played saxophone and keyboards for the rhythm and blues group Average White Band. The band formed in 1972 in London (England), comprising Ball and five other musicians; namely Malcolm "Mollie" Duncan (b.1945), Alan Gorrie (b.1946), Robbie McIntosh (1950-74), Owen "Onnie" McIntyre (b.1945) and Canadian Mike Rosen, soon to be replaced by Hamish Stuart (b.1949). Their debut album Show your Hand (1973) showed potential but was not a commercial success. They quickly moved to the USA and entered the charts in 1974 with AWB, their so-called White Album, which was widely regarded as a masterpiece. Other hits included Cut the Cake (1975), Person to Person (1976), Benny and Us (1977), Shine (1980) and Cupid's in Fashion (1982). The band split up in 1983, only to re-group in 1989 with a new line-up which still included Gorrie, Ball and McIntyre, going on to further success with Aftershock (1989), Live on the Test (1995) and Soul Tattoo (1997). Ball left the band shortly after recording this last album.
