Arthur Elphinstone

(6th Lord Balmerino)

1688 - 1746

Jacobite. The third son of John Elphinstone, 4th Lord Balmerino (1652 - 1736), Elphinstone resigned a commission in the British Army to join the Jacobite Rising of 1715. Thereafter he escaped to France, but returned to Scotland in 1733 having been pardoned. However, he was one of the first to join the 1745 Rising, marching south with the Jacobite Army to Derby and fighting at Falkirk. However, he was captured at Culloden and was taken to London where he was tried for treason at Westminster Hall. Found guilty, he was beheaded on Tower Hill, ending the line of the Lord Balmerino.
