Peter Thomas Anthony Manuel

1927 - 1958

Notorious murderer. Born in New York (USA) of Scottish parents, Manuel was brought up in Coventry (England). Crime quickly became a way of life and he was imprisoned for the first time at the age of sixteen. Following further prison sentences, he moved to Glasgow in 1953 where he became involved in burglary and assault. His killing began with a 17-year-old girl in 1956; her body being found on the fifth tee of a golf course in East Kilbride. Later the same year he murdered three women in High Burnside (Rutherglen). However, he was arrested for a burglary and jailed. On his release he killed a taxi-driver in Newcastle (England). Between the 27th December 1957 and 1st January 1958 he callously murdered another 17-year-old girl in Mount Vernon and a family in Uddingston (South Lanarkshire). Manuel was arrested and became the subject of a sensational trial at Glasgow High Court, at which he defended himself. However, he was convicted of seven murders and sentenced to death.

One of the most dangerous psychopaths in British criminal history, Manuel was hanged at Barlinnie Prison on the 11th July 1958, one of the last executions in Scotland.
