Marine artist. Born in Ayr, Wilson became an apprentice with a notable firm of house-painters in Edinburgh and trained as an artist with Alexander Nasmyth (1758 - 1840). He lived in Montrose for a time and then moved to London in 1798. Here Wilson developed as a marine artist, painting coastal scenes in oil and watercolour, strongly influenced by the Dutch school. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. His son John James Wilson (1818-75) was also a notable artist.
