Sir George Bruce


c.1550 - 1625

Laird of Carnock in West Fife, Bruce was a successful merchant who is famous for promoting industry in the Burgh of Culross. He installed an ingenious apparatus for the draining of coal-mines, and is credited with sinking the first mine under the sea. He built Culross Palace as his home.

His burial vault is in Culross Abbey with an ornate monument standing above.
