Alex Arthur


1978 -

Boxer. Born in Dumbiedykes (Edinburgh), Arthur was raised in Drummond Street on the South Side of the city. He had his first professional fight in Manchester in 2000 and went on to win a succession of contests. In 2002, he won the British super featherweight title, and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental super featherweight titles. In 2003, he won World Boxing Association (WBA) Inter-Continental super featherweight title at the Braehead Arena, but he also suffered his first loss, to Michael Gomez in a bad-tempered fight at Meadowbank Stadium. He went on to win European and Commonwealth titles, and regain his previous titles. In total, he won 31 out of his 34 professional matches.

Arthur was awarded an MBE in the 2012 Birthday Honours, presented by HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay. He retired in 2013 and now coaches boxing at his own gym. Arthur now lives in the Newington district of Edinburgh.
