Kate Muir


1964 -

Journalist. Born in Dalmuir, Muir was educated at Westbourne School for Girls in Glasgow and then read law at the University of Glasgow, followed by a diploma in journalism at Cardiff University. She joined the The Times in 1990 as a columnist and travelled to Paris, New York and Washington D.C. as a foreign correspondent. She became film critic for Times in 2010 but left in 2017 to concentrate on writing and film-making. Her books include Arms and the Woman (1992), which examines the challenges faced women in the armed services, a travel work, The Insider's Guide to Paris (1999) and The Great Menopause Scandal (2021), together with three novels Suffragette City (1999), Left Bank (2006) and West Coast (2008). Muir now lives in London with her husband and children.
