George Ross

c.1700 - 1786

Laird and businessman. George Ross of Pitkerrie made his fortune as an army agent in London. He acquired the Cromarty Estate in 1767 and used his wealth to improve the estate and village, both of which had declined since a period of prosperity in the middle of the 17th Century. Ross built a ropeworks, brewery, pier, together with a new Court House (1782), a Gaelic Chapel (1783) and, for himself, Cromarty House (1772).

Ross was elected Member of Parliament for the Tain Burghs shortly before his death. He is buried in Richmond (Surrey).
