Sir James Anderson


1824 - 1893

Captain of the Great Eastern. Born in Dumfries and educated at the Academy there, Anderson began his career as a printer with the Dumfries Herald newspaper despite a longing for the sea. He achieved his ambition at the age of sixteen and was quickly promoted. He joined the Cunard Company in 1851 and went on to command some of their most notable ships. He was Captain of the Great Eastern during its voyage to lay the Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable in 1866 and was knighted for his efforts.

He died in London.
