Sir Harold Montague (Monty) Finniston


1912 - 1991

Re-organiser of British Steel. Monty Finniston was born and educated in Glasgow. He was appointed Chairman of the nationalised British Steel Corporation in 1973, and knighted in the same year. He reorganised the industry, but became unpopular with the government of the day when he wanted to close unprofitable plants.

Later he became Chancellor of Stirling University, and chaired a government inquiry into engineering in the UK.
