John Lyon

(9th Earl of Strathmore; John Bowes-Lyon)

1737 - 1776

Noble. He took his seat in the House of Lords as a Scottish Representative Peer in 1767. In the same year, he married the English heiress Elizabeth Bowes in London. She was the richest lady in the country at the time, having inherited substantial coal-mining interests in County Durham. He spent a substantial amount of her fortune restoring Glamis Castle. It was not a happy marriage; Lyon drank heavily and paid little attention to his wife. Despite his huge debts, it came as some relief to his wife when he died at sea en route to Portugal.
