Distiller. Born into a successful family of distillers in Clackmannanshire, Stein ran the distillery at Kilbagie, but is best known for inventing the Continuous Still in 1826, which brought considerable efficiencies to the industry. This new still was soon used by Stein's cousin, John Haig (1802-78), at his Cameronbridge Distillery. Stein died in Clackmannan.
