Regent of Scotland. An ally of Henry VIII of England, he led several invasions of Scotland, but fell from favour when Elizabeth I acceded, because he was a Roman Catholic. He did however succeed in bringing about the marriage of his son, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (1545-67), to Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87).
After Mary's abdication, Lennox succeeded James Stuart (the Earl of Moray) as Regent, when Stuart was murdered. Lennox himself was killed at Stirling by Mary's supporters shortly thereafter.
