David Gordon Mundell


1962 -

Politician. Born in Dumfries and raised in Newton Wamphray and Lockerbie, Mundell was educated at Lockerbie Academy. He studied law at the University of Edinburgh and business administration at the University of Strathclyde. He joined the Conservative Party in the 1970s but defected to the Social Democrats in 1981, later serving as a Social Democrat councillor on Annandale and Eskdale District Council and then Dumfries and Galloway Council. He worked in the telecommunications industry until he was elected a Conservative Member of the Scottish Parliament in 1999, representing the South of Scotland. He was re-elected in 2003. In 2005, he was elected Member of Parliament for the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale constituency, serving as the only Scottish Conservative in the Westminster Parliament. He served as Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland (2005-10) and then Under-Secretary of State for Scotland in the Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition from 2010, serving under Danny Alexander (b.1972) and Michael Moore (b.1965).
