Richard Crichton


c.1771 - 1817

Architect. The son of an Edinburgh mason, Crichton began his career as a draughtsman in the architectural practice of John, Robert and James Adam. His work includes Rossie Castle (Angus, 1795), the Bank of Scotland Head Office (Edinburgh, 1801, with Robert Reid), Gask House (Perth & Kinross, 1801), Stirling Old Town Jail (1811), Dunglass House (East Lothian, 1811, demolished 1947) and a remodelling of Balbirnie House (Fife, 1815). He became a Burgess of Edinburgh in 1797.

Crichton lies buried alongside his parents in the kirkyard of St. Cuthberts Church.
