Geoffrey (Geoff) Copcutt


1928 - 1997

Architect. Born in Wortley (Yorkshire, England), Copcutt's architectural training was at South East Essex School of Art (1944-47) and then, following National Service, at Edinburgh College of Art (1949-51). He began his career in the City Architect's Department in Edinburgh but then spent some years in Leicester before joining the Cumbernauld Development Corporation 1958. He took responsibility for the award-winning Cumbernauld Town Centre, which was internationally significant. In 1963 he moved to Northern Ireland to work on another New Town and but the following year resigned and took a position with the United Nations in New York. He next spent three years as the Professor of Architecture at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh (USA) but the remainder of his career was spent in private practice. He died in the Philippines.
