Sir Alexander Stevenson


1860 - 1936

Edinburgh politician. Born in Dalry (North Ayrshire), the son of a mission preacher, Stevenson moved east with his family and was educated in Bo'ness. He became a jeweller and watchmaker, but is best known as a local politician, joining Edinburgh Corporation as a Liberal Councillor in 1900. He rose to become City Treasurer (1922-25) and Lord Provost (1926-29). He was knighted in 1928 and awarded an honorary degree by the University of Edinburgh the following year.

He died in Edinburgh, where several streets are named in his memory.
