Scientist. Born in Rosneath on the west shore of the Gare Loch (Argyll and Bute), the son of a minister. Anderson studied at the University of Glasgow, where he became Professor of Oriental Languages (1756) and then Natural Philosophy (1760). He bequeathed his wealth to found Anderson's College in Glasgow, which became an integral part of the University of Strathclyde. His name is remembered in their Andersonian Library.
