Arms of the Keith Earls Marischal of Scotland

Unsuccessful Jacobite General. Probably born at Inverugie Castle, Keith was the last of the Hereditary Great Marischals of Scotland, the title and estates having been forfeit as punishment for supporting the Jacobite rising of 1715. He was very close to his brother James Francis Edward Keith (1696 - 1758) who had escaped after the '15 and later became a Field Marshall in the Prussian Army. Both brothers were involved with the abortive Spanish invasion of 1719, which had been decimated by storms, reducing the Spanish forces to 5% of their original strength. Weeks later, Keith led the Jacobite army to defeat at the Battle of Glenshiel. He later joined his brother in Prussia and was appointed Ambassador to Paris (1751), Governor of Neuchatel (1752) and Ambassador to Spain (1758) by Frederick the Great.
