William Dingwall Fordyce


1836 - 1875

Politician and landowner. Fordyce served as Liberal Member of Parliament for Aberdeenshire (1866-68) and then East Aberdeenshire (1868-75). He inherited the estate of Brucklay Castle and is notable as a kindly landlord, who insured his tenant's homes and provided transport for them to travel to nearby towns. He lobbied for the Formartine and Buchan Railway came to Brucklay and nearby Maud. Fordyce died at just 39 and lies buried in the grounds of Brucklay Castle, where his grave is marked by an obelisk. The Culsh Monument was raised in his honour by his grateful tenants.
