Engineer. Born in Larbert, the son of John Gibb (1776 - 1850), who worked with Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834). Gibb was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Marischal College, and was apprenticed to Telford before entering a partnership with his father. Gibb helped his father build lighthouses for Robert Stevenson (1772 - 1850), taking charge of the construction of Cape Wrath Lighthouse (1828), and the pair were responsible for the Bridge of Don (1831), Dean Bridge (1832), the Almond Valley section of the Edinburgh-Glasgow Railway (1839-42) and Aberdeen Harbour improvements (1840s). After his father's death Gibb became Engineer to both the Aberdeen Railway and the Great North of Scotland Railway. He built a further business based on his father's promotion of the use of granite, gaining the lease for Rubislaw Quarry to quarry this stone.
Gibb served as a Town Councillor in Aberdeen, and for a time was the city's Harbour Master. He a died at his home Willowbank in Aberdeen. His son Easton Gibb (1841 - 1916) was also a noted engineer.
