Edward Calvert

1847 - 1914

Architect, noted for his domestic work in the Edinburgh area. Born in Middlesex (England), the son of a corn and coal dealer, Calvert trained under Frederick Thomas Pilkington (1832-98) in Edinburgh. He is particularly noted for his Scots Baronial tenements in Marchmont (Marchmont Crescent, Marchmont Road, Spottiswoode Street and Warrender Park Terrace) and Bruntsfield (Bruntsfield Place and Montpelier). He also built tenement flats in Portobello and fine sandstone ashlar-fronted villas on Colinton Road (Edinburgh) and Polwarth (Polwarth Terrace). Many of his designs are now listed for their architectural importance. Calvert died at his home, Perciville on Willowbrae Road, and lies buried in Grange Cemetery.
