Brother of John Dalrymple (1648 - 1707) and youngest son of James Dalrymple, Viscount Stair (1619-95). Sir David was Auditor of the Exchequer and a Commissioner of the Act of Union (1707). Dalrymple bought Hailes Castle (East Lothian) and in 1707 bought Whitehill (near Musselburgh) which he renamed Newhailes, but to remember his original castle, he had it painted on a panel in the renowned library. In 1691, Dalrymple married Janet Rochead, daughter of Sir James Rochead of Inverleith.
