Iain Cuthbertson


1930 - 2009

Actor. Born in Glasgow, the son of eminent biochemist Sir David Cuthbertson (1900-89), educated at the Glasgow Academy, Aberdeen Grammer School and the University of Aberdeen, where he later served as Rector. He joined the Citizen's Theatre Company in Glasgow (1958) and also worked in radio and television. He was appointed Artistic Director of Perth Repertory Theatre in 1967. His television roles included Charlie Endell in Budgie (1972), John Sutherland in Sutherland's Law (1976) and Charles Stafford in Painted Lady (1997). Cuthbertson's films include The Railway Children (1970), The Assam Garden (1985), Gorillas in the Mist (1988) and Chasing the Deer (1994).

He suffered a debilitating stroke in 1982 but recovered and returned to work. Shortly afterwards he settled in the East Ayrshire village of Dalrymple. He died in Ayr Hospital, with a funeral at Dalrymple Parish Church and Ayr Crematorium. Cuthbertson will be remembered as fine actor with a distinguished appearance, great height and resonant voice.
