Sir John Hope of Hopetoun

1650 - 1682

Courtier and member of an Edinburgh family of merchants and lawyers. He bought the estates of Airthrey and Abercorn (Hopetoun) in 1678, the latter from the Seton family.

Hope lost his life in the wreck of the frigate Gloucester off Yarmouth, having ensured the safety of the Duke of York (later King James VII). Partially in appreciation of this act of bravery, but largely in anticipation of his support for the Act of Union, his son and heir, Charles, was created 1st Earl of Hopetoun shortly after he came of age (1703).
