William Douglas

(3rd Earl of Queensberry; 1st Duke of Queensberry)

1637 - 1695

As Lord High Treasurer of Scotland, he wielded great power. He was created Marquis of Queensberry (1682) and then Duke of Queensberry (1684). Douglas built Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries and Galloway as his family seat (1691), but was so shocked by the cost that he lived in it for only one night. He obtained the title of Earl of March for his second son and was succeeded by his first son, James (1662 - 1711).
