John Paterson

? - 1832

Architect. The son of an architect and builder, John Paterson became a pupil of Robert Adam (1728-92) and served as Adam's 'Clerk of Works' between 1789-91, when he supervised work on the Old College of the University of Edinburgh.

On his own account, Paterson worked at Pinkie House (1800) and for the Setons at Winton House (1805) in East Lothian. Again for the Setons, he built Eglinton Castle near Kilwinning (1796). Paterson had a habit of exceeding his brief and relations with Hugh Montgomerie, the 12th Earl of Eglinton (1739 - 1819), seem to have deteriorated to such an extent that Paterson raised a legal action against the Earl for the recovery of fees and expenses. He was also responsible for St. Paul's Church in Perth.
