Motorcycle racer, renowned for his daring and bravery, which earned him the soubriquet The Flying Scotsman. Born in Scotstoun (Glasgow), McIntyre began serious competition in off-road racing in 1948. Soon he turned to track racing and found immediate success at his first competition at Balado Airfield, Kinross. He is most famously associated with the Isle of Man TT race, where he was the first to record a 100 mph (160 km/hr) lap.
He sustained fatal injuries at Oulton Park in Cheshire (England) and died nine days later in hospital in Chester. A classic race is held annually in his honour at East Fortune Airfield (East Lothian). In 2001, McIntyre was honoured as one of the first members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.
