Restoration of the Scottish Parliament

(Scottish Devolution)
1999

A Scottish Parliament was re-instated after 292 years, following the devolution of powers from London through the Scotland Act, 1997. The people of Scotland voted for this new Parliament in a referendum promised by the Labour government under Tony Blair. The architect of devolution was widely seen as Donald Dewar, who became Scotland's first First Minister, but was to die in office the following year.
