Sensation

A science centre located behind the Nethergate in Dundee, Sensation lies just to the southwest of the city centre. It offers a range of interactive exhibits and experiments aimed at making science accessible to the general public. Housed in a purpose-built building, the striking geometric design is the work of Leith-based architects Merrylees & Robertson. The centre, which is run as a charity, was opened in July, 2000 and cost £5 million, substantially supported by lottery funds from the Millennium Commission, together with enterprise funds, charitable trusts and the local authority.

While not on the scale of some of the other Millennium attractions, the sixty exhibits within the centre are designed for all ages, with a strong educational focus and sometimes provocative. The exhibits and experiments are divided between zones representing the senses; namely hearing, sight / light, touch, taste and smell, together with heat and position. Visitor enjoyment is enhanced by staff involvement.

Sensation was voted Scottish Family Attraction of the Year in 2003 and also provides a venue for exhibitions, conferences and meetings.
