DM Beith

(RNAD Beith)

DM Beith, previously the Royal Naval Armaments Depot (RNAD) Beith, is located 1¼ miles (2 km) to the south of the North Ayrshire town of Beith. It opened as a munitions depot in 1943 on farmland which was bisected by the Bombo Burn and surrounded several old collieries (Barr, Birsieknowe and Gatend). The depot extends to 350 ha (850 acres) and employs more than 400 staff. The buildings were spaced across the site, often surrounded by embankments, to minimise damage if there was an explosion. Renamed as a Defence Munitions centre in 1994, most recently the depot has assembled, stored and serviced complex weapons such as Spearfish torpedoes, ALARM (Air-Launched Anti-Radiation Missile), Brimstone and Storm Shadow missiles. Until 1996, the depot was served by its own railway, a branch of the Glasgow South Western Line.
