Rainy Hall, New College

Lying within the University of Edinburgh's New College on The Mound, the Rainy Hall takes the form of an Oxbridge dining room. Built in 1900 by Sydney Mitchell & Wilson to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of New College, it is named after Robert Rainy, who was appointed Principal in 1874 and Moderator of the first General Assembly of the United Free Church in 1900. The hall features a fine hammerbeam roof, featuring ornate paintwork and gilding, half-height wood panelling adorned with coats of arms, portraits and a bronze relief of Rainy. There are also unusual chandeliers. It still serves as a refectory and common room for the College community.
